Between 2010 and 2011 Andrea and I lived together. One evening, at home chilling out together, we decided to watch a movie and chose "The Social Network”. Andrea could not stop talking about it during the following days, and kept mentioning that entrepreneurship was the way to go. Those days he was a young banker at Morgan Stanley. He shared a story of how one of his clients was a flamboyant entrepreneur, would show up at meetings with an open colourful shirt and seemed to deeply enjoy life, while at the same time building a business empire. Andrea was impressed and felt in those meetings that he was sitting on the wrong side of the table. Months later, he wrote a two-page word sheet entitled Zero-Gravity. Just Andrea, his vision, and two pages. It was a well thought out and simply written plan for this future business. I asked him if he was planning to use this to raise money for his new venture, he answered no. He felt that having a minority investor could remotely resemble the idea of working for someone else, which was not part of the plan. So much for all those sophisticated venture capital classes at HBS! We laughed about it. However, I think at that stage Andrea had already learned the most important things, he knew himself and what he wanted, and in those days he was defining his vision for life.

A few months later Andrea left Morgan Stanley and our place in New York to move to Milan. In New York, Andrea`s lifestyle was typical of a promising banker. Hard working, yes, but along with expensive dinners and fancy clubs. In a matter of weeks, Andrea was able to completely transform himself. In Milan he rented a very small flat and sublet one room to lower his monthly rent. He used all his savings to invest in his plan. He focused on practising sports and building new friendships around his passions. No need for fancy dinners anymore. He almost withdrew for a good couple of years from his previous circle of friends, and I suppose that this helped him focus on his new vision.

During those days I would visit him to catch up as in the meantime I had moved to London. Andrea was really having the time of his life. He was in great shape, having lost the extra weight he had gained in New York due to long nights at work and unhealthy food. He was snowboarding and socializing, building the group of friends and supporters that would represent the initial network around Zero-Gravity. I remember that one evening I arrived from London and we planned to catch up. This was when the Zero-Gravity sport center in Milan was in the early phase of construction. He told me of how of he had levered his engineering skills to oversee the construction from scratch, saving money and making sure that everything was built with top-quality materials. I assumed we would go straight out to some bars. Not at all. Just a half an hour from landing, while still dressed in my office suit, I found myself with Andrea at the Zero-Gravity building site, with a wooden stick in my hand, helping him to chase off few guys that had been stealing machineries from the site.

That was Andrea. While he excelled at the most celebrated universities and could write very sophisticated presentations about corporate mergers, he was also able to roll up his sleeves and self-police his site if needed. Andrea could work no-stop for months and could also party for days if it was the right moment to do so. He was pure energy, vision and fun. He did things with total passion and conviction, and nothing would get in his way. He was also honest and respectful, inclusive and sensitive to others. He was one of the most inspiring, original and open-minded people I have ever met, while also being an easy-going and affectionate friend, able to open up for thoughtful conversations. Andrea was also deeply proud to be Italian, and held the strong conviction that business could grow and prosper in Italy. He thought that Italy was a blessed unique country in the world, and was very offended when people criticized Italy.

Andrea founded Zero-Gravity, a fast-growing innovative sport center. Prior to that he was a banker at Morgan Stanley in New York and London, and business analyst at Mckinsey. His academic career was also stellar, with Harvard Business School, Politecnico di Milano and Collegio di Milano in his bag. Education is an essential foundation on which one can build his/her future endeavours, no matter what they might be, and scholarships played a key role in Andrea`s chance to succeed and grace us with his talent. We need more Andreas in our lives. Please join us in donating for new scholarships established by Andrea`s family and friends in his honour.

Discorso dal funerale

Parlo qui oggi in rappresentanza di un gruppo di amici in cordoglio, all’interno di una chiesa in lutto, dove ci siamo riuniti per il bisogno di condividere non solo il nostro dolore ma soprattutto lo straordinario impatto che Andrea ha avuto in tutte le nostre vite.

Andrea era la persona che conosce il più grande numero di miei segreti, sia passati sia recenti. E’ stato il primo del nostro gruppo di amici a lanciare la propria azienda, mostrandoci come il successo professionale non aveva bisogno di grandi aziende alle spalle. Ma che noi avevamo il potere di creare un nuovo grande marchio da zero.

Ci sono molti di noi in questa chiesa che hanno fatto scelte personali o professionali che poi si sono rivelate vincenti e giuste, ma che allora erano viste come strane o inopportune, solamente grazie ad Andrea, che ci consigliato di prendere la decisione giusta che ci avrebbe portato felicità invece della scelta che volevano gli altri.

La prima volta che andai a trovare Andrea a ZeroGravity, ascoltai un discorso di alcuni bambini. Uno di questi bambini diceva che aveva avuto una pessima settimana, la maestra cattiva, i compiti a casa, i litigi dei genitori. E nei momenti più bui, quando era solo in camera da letto, il pensiero di andare quel sabato da ZeroGravity gli aveva dato la forza di andare avanti.

Per quel bambino, e per molti altre persone oggi, ZeroGravity rappresenta un obiettivo e un sogno a cui tendere.

Ci sono uomini che vengono ricordati per aver trasformato il nostro modo di vivere la vita di tutti i giorni. Andrea ha trasformato il nostro modo di pensare agli obiettivi a lungo termine, di essere ambiziosi, di cercare la felicità, di scegliere le sfide per le quali combattere. Andrea ha cambiato la nostra vita non solo di oggi, ma la nostra vita tra 50 e 100 anni.

Andrea ha trasformato il nostro modo di sognare.

E per questo gli saremo sempre grati. Grazie.

Con Andrea non se ne è andato solo un amico, un compagno, un imprenditore di successo. Con lui se ne è andata anche un po’ della genialità di questo mondo. Adesso tocca a noi risvegliare quella stessa capacità di osare e di dare il tutto per tutto non solo dentro di noi ma anche in chi - come lui – ha il talento e la forza, ma non sempre i mezzi, per credere nei propri sogni.

Andrea non ha avuto paura di giocarsi tutto, ma ha sempre voluto vicini gli affetti più cari, i suoi genitori e Michele, che hanno lavorato con lui fin dai primi momenti e esperimenti. Veniva da una famiglia di gran lavoratori, a cui teneva profondamente e a cui sapeva di dovere molto. Ci teneva che fossero orgogliosi di lui, nonostante il suo spirito ruvido, ribelle e anticonformista.

Mi è capitato più di una volta di comprare mutande o calzini ad Andrea. Non tanto perché avessi uno spirito particolarmente materno, ma perché non ne potevo più di vederlo andare in giro con le calze bucate! Era esasperante a volte vedere quanto trascurasse sé stesso. Io lavoravo ancora in ufficio, in pieno slancio di carriera, in tailleur, tacchi alti e borse firmate. E non capivo. Solo oggi - dopo cinque anni da freelance, con un lavoro che mi sono più o meno inventata e che non mi farà certo diventare ricca ma mi regala una grande libertà - capisco il suo atteggiamento. E capisco quanto inconsciamente mi ha insegnato ad andare all’essenziale, a concentrarmi sulle cose che contano davvero distinguendole da una forma che solo raramente tradisce la sostanza.

Ottimo discesista, buon passista, veloce il giusto, aveva uno scatto mortifero e una capacità di leggere la gara da atleta intelligente. Andrea era un giovane ciclista di talento, un talento che è sempre stato capace di riconoscere anche negli altri, come solo i veri leader sanno fare. Al suo secondo anno da allievo a Verona, intuisce il potenziale di un giovane compagno destinato a lasciare il segno. Alla 3Tre bresciana, la più importante corse a tappe internazionale nel panorama junior, prende per mano Damiano Cunego. In discesa nella tappa decisiva lo pilota con saggezza e Damiano conquista uno dei suoi innumerevoli successi della stagione 1998. (tratto da questo link)

Nel frigorifero dell’appartamento di via Tartini - che Andrea ha condiviso con Michele nei primi anni di vita di Zero-Gravity – è rimasta per mesi una marmellatina, di quelle rotonde, monoporzione. Un giorno, sistemando la spesa, gli ho chiesto se non fosse il caso di buttarla. Lui all’inizio mi ha guardata come se avessi bestemmiato in chiesa ma poi mi ha spiegato che quella marmellatina era allo stesso tempo un promemoria e un portafortuna, perché a un certo punto era stata davvero l’unica cosa che gli era rimasta in quel frigorifero. Perché ogni centesimo di ogni risparmio l’aveva investito in Zero-Gravity. Quella marmellatina gli ricordava quanto sacrificio gli fosse costato inseguire i propri sogni e allo stesso tempo quanta fortuna rappresentasse in quel momento anche solo poter riempire il frigorifero.

Dal momento in cui ci hai lasciato, per settimane sono stato preso, come tanti altri, dallo sconforto, incredulita’ e incapacita’ di accettare e spiegarmi quello che e’ successo. Poi tutto e’ inaspettatamente cambiato il giorno del tuo funerale, quando improvvisamente e grazie all’aiuto tuo e di chi ti stava vicino, la mia prospettiva e’ cambiata e ho visualizzato tre fantastiche lezioni di vita che mi hai lasciato:

VIVI LA VITA SEMPRE AL MASSIMO
Tutti sappiamo l’intensita’ della tua vita ed una frase del sacerdote l’ha espressa perfettamente: “E’ come se avesse vissuto tre vite in 40 anni. 40 per 3 fa 120 anni”. Tu hai senz’altro fatto piu’ in 40 anni di quello che tanti riuscirebbero a fare in 120 e cio’ ti ha permesso di sfruttare al massimo i pochi anni che sei stato con noi e a lasciarci cosi’ tanto.

A UN CERTO PUNTO SMETTI DI CERCARE GRATIFICAZIONI DALL’ESTERNO E CONCENTRATI A FARE QUELLO CHE E’ VERAMENTE IMPORTANTE PER TE.
Per questo devo ringraziare il nostro amico Ripo, che durante il suo messaggio, ha ricordato come dopo aver raggiunto i piu’ grandi successi accademici e professionali possibili, associando il tuo nome a quello di prestigiose organizzazioni, hai capito che non avevi piu’ bisogno di riconoscimenti di altri ed eri pronto a creare la tua organizzazione, fondata sulla tua passione.

COSTRUISCI E LASCIA UN’ERDEITA’ CHE VADA OLTRE LA FAMIGLIA E GLI AMICI
Qui l’ispirazione sono stati il logo di Zero Gravity decorato di fiori che stava al tuo fianco per l’ultimo saluto e i tanti tuoi colleghi con la tshirt della tua/loro azienda che si abbracciavano cercando conforto e la forza di portare avanti questo tuo sogno diventato realta’. Lasci a loro, alle tante persone e bambini che giorno visitano le tue strutture, e a tutti noi, un’eredita’ molto concreta, positiva e pesante che mi ha fatto capire come sia possibile e importante impegnarsi a costruire qualcosa che rimanga dopo la nostra morte e aiuti gli altri.

Questi insegnamenti, insieme alle tante feste pazze e spensierate in giro per il mondo, rimarranno per sempre con me.

Sembra ieri, ma in realtà era la settimana di Natale del 2006. Una settimana in cui hai concentrato molte dimostrazioni delle tue qualità:
– Rinunciasti alla sponsorizzazione di McKinsey per il tuo master, perché volevi essere libero e procedere con le tue forze, nonostante sembrasse un azzardo
– Mettesti nero su bianco le tue intenzioni sul tuo futuro nella domanda di ammissione ad Harvard. Sembrava avessi già in mente Zero-Gravity con quelle frasi: “creating and running a dream-realizer company is the most meaningful thing I can do” e “I also want to give the possibility to young kids to step out of a dismissed life. As I learnt myself, it is first more important to generate in these young men a strong desire to sport success and then to inspire them to embrace success in everything they do.”
– Mi aiutasti ad affrontare e sdrammatizzare un problema molto brutto, di quelli che rendono inermi anche gli spiriti più forti
– Mi chiedesti dove prendere il migliore Panettone per passare le feste in famiglia
– Festeggiammo insieme la mia partenza per New York, rendendo col tuo stile ancora più memorabile quella festa con centinaia di persone

In questi 15 anni, hai raggiunto tanti successi accrescendo sempre le tue qualità. Il tuo coraggio, la tua generosità, la tua forza di realizzare i sogni, la tua capacità di creare sempre squadre e famiglie, la tua naturalezza per ispirare affetto e stima, il tuo sorriso e la determinazione nell’affrontare i problemi, la tua voglia di far festa tutti insieme, la tua abilità di far rendere al massimo ogni talento.

Sei stato maestro di tutto ciò, dandoci innumerevoli e spesso incredibili lezioni. Ora che ti abbiamo dovuto salutare in modo così precoce a inaspettato, abbiamo l’onore e l’onere di mettere in pratica e moltiplicare questi tuoi spontanei e preziosissimi insegnamenti.

Caro Andrea,

ti ho sempre ammirato fin da quando ci siamo conosciuti. Sono tantissime le tue doti, troppe le elencarle, ma queste 3 sono quelle che ricordero’ sempre quando si parlera’ “del Poffe”

1) Generosita’. Mi hai sempre aiutato, senza mai un doppio fine. Quando mi hai dato le dritte giuste entrare in McK, quando hai condiviso con me i tuoi essays per HBS, e cosi via. Eri sempre pronto ad aiutare, non solo i tuoi amici, ma tutti quelli che hanno avuto la fortuna di incontrarti nel loro cammino

2) Forza della Natura. Mi ricordero’ sempre gli anni da BA. Tra i piu’ belli ma anche tra i piu’ faticosi della mia vita. E tu, come se nulla fosse, eri capace di lavorare per 14+ ore al giorno, andare a ballare tutta la sera e poi… una doccia e via come se nulla fosse.

3) Independent Thinker: “Non ti curar di loro, ma guarda e passa”. Questo e’ quello che in assoluto ho sempre ammirato di piu’ in te. Hai sempre fatto cio’ che hai voluto, senza mai tener conto del giudizio degli altri. Mi ricordero’ sempre quella serata passata assieme quando mi dissi di voler abbandonare l’Investment Banking. Non ti ho creduto sul momento, devo essere sincero. E sono immensamente felice di dire I WAS WRONG!

Andrea, ti ricordero’ per sempre e grazie per tutto quello che ci hai insegnato.

Nelle ultime settimane mi sono tornati in mente mille ricordi, tutti insieme.
Te le ricordi tu le notti passate al telefono, io a Milano, tu a Boston, a parlare fino all’alba di tutto e di niente?
Quanta vita ci eravamo immaginati, senza nemmeno sbagliarci più di tanto. Con quel filo che ci ha legato a lungo da lontano, fino a che non è stato più possibile trattenerlo.
Eppure ho sempre pensato che ci saremmo ritrovati, che ci sarebbe piaciuto raccontarci chi eravamo diventati dopo esserci lasciati andare.
Mi tengo stretto il privilegio di averti conosciuto quando a poco più di vent’anni tutto sembrava possibile. Ti penserò sempre, tu salutami chi sai.

Ciao Poffe! Si, mea culpa, bruttissima abitudine quella presa in America di chiamarci tutti per cognome, come fossimo calciatori, o rockstar. Ma ora, piu’ che mai, mi rendo conto che Tu, caro Andrea, caro Poffe, eri la vera Rockstar di tutti noi. Il fuoriclasse che tutti ammiravamo per il suo coraggio, la sua tenacita’, ma allo stesso tempo, semplicente ed umilmente, caro Poffe, eri il nostro amico. Amico vero, sempre sincero e mai banale. Ogni conversazione con te era un pozzo dal quale trarre ispirazione. Ci hai insegnato che grazie al sacrificio, all’impegno, alla voglia di non mollare mai, ogni sogno puo’ diventare realta’. Sei l’amico di cui tutti andiamo fieri, di cui raccontiamo la storia, perche’ la Tua storia e’ di quelle che non basterebbe un film per raccontarla. La tua normalita’ era l’assoluta straordinarieta’. Sei Te ad avermi insegnato che finire “con il culo per terra” e’ nient’altro che un’opportunita’ per stravolgere la propria strategia. Grazie. Conservero’ con orgoglio la nostra amicizia, e la raccontero’ ai nostri figli in tutta la sua bellezza. Ci manchi e ci mancherai infinitamente, ma infinitamente strapperai anche in noi il ghigno per ogni minuto passato insieme. Ciao bro, ciao amico, ciao maestro, ma soprattutto, ciao Poffe!

Very few people, a very select, handpicked few, create legacy at a young age. Andrea, you are that person.

We always joked that my life changed since the day we met and decided to live together at that little wooden house on Bank Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the house that has probably never seen so much activity before or after that year of 2007-2008. We always wondered how it is still standing. We joked, but it turned out that you Andrea indeed changed not only my life, but also the lives of everyone who was lucky to meet you on their path.

The people around you weren’t short on confidence or success – academically you have been in most competitive schools, and professionally you’ve excelled in the toughest teams at the toughest companies in the world. But even among this crowd you stood out, a head high above everyone else. What made you special was your special way, being true to yourself, following your ideas and making them reality. The success of Zero-Gravity, started with your small savings and built with your own hands, literally, is a living testament to this.

The Andrea Poffe way has always been the most authentic way.

Your determination inspired me, us, everyone. You are the example of most ultimate authenticity. One that is a rare quality to have on this planet, when it is so much easier to follow a well-trodden path, which is what everyone else pretty much does. Not you. You created your own path.

In the moment of hesitation, I think of your originality Andrea, and, as a lighthouse, you guide me, reminding that the real way to live is to be true to yourself, to be King, as you always said.

Andrea Poffe, the inspiration you gave us is now an eternal light that lives inside of our hearts. The legacy you left behind means you will remain with us forever.
